Product Information
What is Recon and why do I need it?
Recon delivers an industry revolution in 3-D geological interpretation performance with true 3-D subsurface solutions, blazingly fast interpretation updates and seamless integration with Landmark's OpenWorks and SeisWorks. Change any part of your interpretation, or add new data, and all 3-D surfaces, cross-sections, isochores, and zone attribute maps immediately update to reflect the changes. The effect on your workflow speed and approach is dramatic and translates into higher quality interpretations, lower risk, and improved success. For more information, please refer to the Recon Features section of the website.
Why is Recon better than competing geological interpretation software?
Recon is the industry's first 3-D, real-time geological interpretation application specifically designed to enable geologists to correlate well logs and map horizons directly in 3-D using affordable desktop workstations.

Unlike its main competitor, Recon does not require you to spread your geological interpretation workflow across multiple applications or modules, but offers an integrated, real time 3-D environment that significantly reduces your geological interpretation cycle-time by turning tediously repetitive workflows into single-button click operations.

Compare Recon to the leading competitor and see our advantage for yourself.

Where does Recon fit in my seismic and geological interpretation workflow?
Recon is a 3-D geological interpretation application that fits between seismic interpretation tools (e.g. Landmark SeisWorks) and 3-D reservoir modeling and simulation tools (e.g. Schlumberger Petrel & Eclipse).
Why is 3-D geological interpretation important?
With Recon you can Interpret well logs directly in 3-D instead of just a cross-section at a time. All three Recon windows (3-D, cross-section, and basemap) are linked, giving you a unique view of your reservoir data. You can interpret in any of the three windows and see your changes immediately implemented in the other views.
What new features are included in Recon version 3.0?
  • Direct Connectivity to Landmark Databases for efficient access to real world datasets
  • Dynamic, Interactive Cross Section Animation while Interpreting to improve interpretation efficiency and accuracy
  • 3D Interactive Interpretation with Drag and Drop of Surface and Fault Picks with unlimited Undos
  • Surface Management
    • Easy creation of Stratigraphic and Fault hierarchies
    • Dynamic Structural and Stratigraphic Termination Rules
    • Access to more data types (SeisWorks Horizons and Fault Segments, OpenWorks Point Sets, Grids, Fault Polygon Sets, Well Lists, etc)
    • Surface Data logically grouped and presented by Data Type
  • Session Management
  • Elaborate Data and Grid Operations
  • Improved user experience and workflow efficiency throughout product
What is the difference between geological interpretation and modeling?

Recon enables an interpreter to build a complete geologic framework consisting of surfaces, picks, logs, faults, reservoir properties, etc. Recon includes the ability to extend and truncate surfaces by unconformities and/or the modeling off on-lapping or off-lapping sequences. While this involves modeling of surfaces and faults it is not to be confused with reservoir modeling.

Reservoir modeling involves the building of reservoir and fluid flow models (bounded by structural surfaces) to depict the heterogeneity of a reservoir and to identify barriers to fluid flow, whether through faulting and/or other types of permeability barriers. These models are often used in reservoir simulation models to match past performance and to predict the future performance. Reservoir models are often difficult and time consuming to update. Recon is the ideal tool for getting geology right the first time or for updating the geological framework as new data become available.

My company has 3-D reservoir modeling applications, why do I need Recon?

Recon is focused on getting the geological interpretation correct. The quality of your 3-D reservoir model is directly dependent on the quality of your geological interpretation. Recon can reduce the need for multiple reservoir modeling iterations (garbage in = garbage out) by fixing the interpretations and data earlier in the interpretation cycle.  Reservoir modeling packages do not have robust interpretation tools (limited and simplistic).

My company has 3-D seismic interpretation applications, why do I need Recon?

Recon is not a seismic interpretation application but is complimentary to it. The use of Recon is the logical next step in the G&G interpretive workflow. Recon integrates seismic and geological data in the 3-D depth domain, enabling you to refine your final interpretation. Recon is directly integrated with Landmark SeisWorks and OpenWorks.

I work in an exploration environment with very few wells, how can Recon help?

Exploration risk (seal, trap, reservoir quality, etc.) can be significantly reduced by integrating all available geologic data with the seismic interpretation in the depth domain. Regional correlations can be easily tied to more detailed field correlations, providing a more accurate geologic model. Recon can handle anything from large regional projects to detailed reservoir studies.

I work in an exploitation environment, how can Recon help?

Exploitation teams can benefit greatly by using Recon to integrate seismic, geologic, well test and production data in a 3-D depth cube. Recon can be used to identify delineation and infill drilling targets and easily monitor currently drilling wells and update the geological model in real time.  All surfaces, interval properties, etc. are updated automatically using Cascade Technology.

I work in a development environment, how can Recon help?

Development teams can also benefit greatly by using Recon to integrate seismic, geologic, well test and production data in a 3-D depth cube. In mature fields a detailed Recon interpretation can identify infill drilling and/or re-completion opportunities. In addition, Recon can be used to develop a complete geologic framework where surfaces can be extended and truncated by faults and/or unconformities. On-lapping and off-lapping relationships can also be interpreted in Recon. Reservoir zone properties can be calculated and distributed throughout the framework. Recon can directly connect (import and export) to OpenWorks and SeisWorks (Landmark) projects. Data can also be imported and exported from and to ASCII files that can be imported to other applications like Schlumberger's Petrel (reservoir modeling) application.

I want to do well planning, how can Recon help?

Recon can integrate drilling information along with geological and seismic data. Recon can be used to help develop a detailed well plan along with monitoring the well as it is being drilled and automatically adjust all surfaces, etc. as new data is acquired. This approach could be used to adjust and/or optimize the well plan in real time.

How easy is it to integrate with Schlumberger's Petrel application?

Extremely easy!  Recon provides data loading wizards which can rapidly import standard Petrel data such as wells, curves, picks, faults, pointsets, grids and seismic volume data.  Additionally, Recon provides export tools to a variety of industry formats and ASCII which are easily imported into Petrel.

How do I get Recon to run on a PC?

Recon software runs optimally on a workstation running Red Hat Linux with dual monitors and accelerated graphics. However, if your company runs ThinAnywhere as a thin client, then you can run Recon on your Desktop PC, provided Recon has been installed on a Linux server that can be accessed by ThinAnywhere. Performance will be dependent on server and network performance. Acceptable performance has been observed using the ThinAnywhere solution in a number of companies.

How can I send in feedback or a feature request for a future version of Recon?

We're always on the lookout for great feature requests. In fact, we try to incorporate many feature requests into each release. Send your ideas to AGM software feature requests, where Recon development team members will evaluate them.
