What is Recon and why do I need it?

Where does Recon fit in my seismic and geological interpretation workflow?

Recon is a 3D geological interpretation application that fits between seismic interpretation tools (e.g. Landmark SeisWorks, GeoGraphix Discovery & SMT Kingdom) and 3D reservoir modeling and simulation tools (e.g. Schlumberger Petrel & Eclipse, Roxar RMS and Paradigm GOCAD & SKUA).

Why is 3D geological interpretation important?

With Recon you can interpret well logs directly in 3D instead of just a cross section at a time. All four Recon windows (3D, cross section, map view and well view) are linked, giving you a unique perspective of your reservoir data. You can interpret in any of the four windows and see your changes immediately implemented in the other views.

What new features are included in Recon version 4.0?

* Recon is now available on new platforms: for the Windows 32 and 64 bit operating systems, as well as Linux 32 and 64 bit systems.
* New User Interface to provide a more intuitive and efficient interpretation environment. This new look and feel provides a more consistent User Experience and enables users to learn and retain workflow processes more quickly. The number of button clicks to complete a task has been reduced throughout the entire application.
* Over 300 functions are now available from new Right Mouse Button menus.
* New Drilling Target Identifier feature helps create and plan proposed well locations in all three of the main Recon windows.
* New Automatically Generate Fault Polygons (AFP) feature uses the intersection(s) of fault surfaces with horizon surfaces to generate fault set polygons.
* New Measurement Tool to measure distance and area in all three windows of Recon.
* New GeoImage feature allows users to import an Image File along with a Georeference File.
* New SEG-Y reader enables the user to read and import SEG-Y data directly into a Recon project.
* New Import wizards allow data file imports from many sources. Data types include well header, deviation, and LAS data as well as data for well picks, inter-well picks, point sets, horizons, and log curve ranges.
* Recon is now available with connectivity for OpenWorks R5000, in addition to OW2003.
* Cursor tracking now provides the user the attribute value and the X-Y-Z readout of the location.
* New options and improvements to well interpretation.
* Dip and azimuth values can now be added to inter-well picks.
* New options for cross section definition include Snap to KB Follow Well Path, Snap to TD Follow Well Path, and Snap to Pick.
* 100's of additional new features and improvements.

What is the difference between geological interpretation and modeling?

Recon enables an interpreter to build a complete geologic framework consisting of surfaces, picks, logs, faults, reservoir properties, etc. Recon includes the ability to extend and truncate surfaces by unconformities and/or the modeling off on-lapping or off-lapping sequences. While this involves modeling of surfaces and faults it is not to be confused with reservoir modeling.

Reservoir modeling involves the building of reservoir and fluid flow models (bounded by structural surfaces) to depict the heterogeneity of a reservoir and to identify barriers to fluid flow, whether through faulting and/or other types of permeability barriers. These models are often used in reservoir simulation models to match past performance and to predict the future performance. Reservoir models are often difficult and time consuming to update. Recon is the ideal tool for getting geology right the first time or for updating the geological framework as new data become available.

My company has 3D reservoir modeling applications, why do I need Recon?

Recon is focused on getting the geological interpretation correct. The quality of your 3D reservoir model is directly dependent on the quality of your geological interpretation. Recon can reduce the need for multiple reservoir modeling iterations (garbage in = garbage out) by fixing the interpretations and data earlier in the interpretation cycle. Reservoir modeling packages do not have the interpretation capabilities that are available in Recon.

Recon is not a seismic interpretation application but is complimentary to it. The use of Recon is the logical next step in the G&G interpretive workflow. I work in an exploration environment with very few wells, how can Recon help?

Exploration risk (seal, trap, reservoir quality, etc.) can be significantly reduced by integrating all available geologic data with the seismic interpretation in the depth domain. Regional correlations can be easily tied to more detailed field correlations, providing a more accurate geologic model. Recon can handle anything from large regional projects to detailed reservoir studies. Recon's inter-well picking enables the geologist to easily capture his conceptual model into digital form enabling efficient exchange of ideas.

Exploitation teams can benefit greatly by using Recon to integrate seismic, geologic, well test and production data in a 3D depth cube. Recon can be used to identify delineation and infill drilling targets and easily monitor currently drilling wells and update the geological model in real time. All surfaces, interval properties, etc. are updated automatically using Cascade Technology.

I work in a development environment, how can Recon help?

Development teams can also benefit greatly by using Recon to integrate seismic, geologic, well test and production data in a 3D depth cube. In mature fields a detailed Recon interpretation can identify infill drilling and/or re-completion opportunities. In addition, Recon can be used to develop a complete geologic framework where surfaces can be extended and truncated by faults and/or unconformities.

On-lapping and off-lapping relationships can also be interpreted in Recon. Reservoir zone properties can be calculated and distributed throughout the framework. Recon can directly connect (import and export) to OpenWorks and SeisWorks (Landmark) projects. Data can also be imported and exported from and to ASCII files that can be imported to other applications like Schlumberger's Petrel (reservoir modeling) application.

I want to do well planning, how can Recon help?

Recon can integrate drilling information along with geological and seismic data. Geoscientists can use the New Drilling Target Identifier feature in Recon 4.0 to create and edit proposed well locations in all three of the main Recon windows. This information can easily be exported for use in other well planning tools or by your drilling engineer.

Recon allows for easy comparison of the planned well to the actual well while it is being drilled. As new well information is acquired the geoscientist can quickly add or edit the interpretation and the entire subsurface model is automatically updated. The updated model is used to adjust and/or optimize the well plan in real time ensuring penetration of the most prolific intervals of a reservoir.

RECON Geologic Scenario Manager revolutionizes the geological interpretation workflow by empowering geologists to run and assess multiple interpretation scenarios on the fly. Current mapping and correlation technologies are labor and time intensive typically constraining geologists to deliver a single best case interpretation. The automation of the tedious re-mapping and model building and multiple version capture in RECON and RECON Geologic Scenario Manager empowers geologists to rapidly and efficiently explore and communicate alternative interpretation scenarios for the first time and evaluate the material impact on the viability of a project in real time, ultimately delivering a more accurate interpretation.

How easy is it to integrate with Schlumberger's Petrel application?

Extremely easy! Recon provides a RECON Petrel® Plug-in to import and export data directly from within the Petrel application. The new Petrel Plug-in enables fast and efficient data sharing providing an integrated environment for exceptional collaboration. Additionally, data loading wizards which can rapidly import standard Petrel data such as wells, curves, picks, faults, pointsets, grids and seismic volume data. Recon provides export tools to a variety of industry formats and ASCII which are easily imported into Petrel.

What is Cascade Geomorphology?

RECON: Cascade Geomorphology is an application for geomorphological or stratal time slicing. Cascade Geomorphology divides any seismic data volume of time or depth varying internal thickness into uniform geologic time increments making seismic imaging of depositional systems much easier to delineate. Cascade Geomorphology has been enhanced in version 4.0 to read 16 bit and 32 bit volumes and is compatible with OpenWorks and SeisWorks R5000.
