IBM & AGM's Recon™: from Desktop to Deep View -
The Future of 3-D Geological Interpretation
Abstract

Visualization tools in exploration and production computing have mainly been focused on the tasks of analysis and presentation. AGM’s Recon™ is an example of a select group of next-generation tools that have made the transition to the 3-D integrated decision support environment. Recon’s scalable architecture is capable of combining thousands of wells with large seismic datasets in a real-time, 3-D geological interpretation environment. Through the combination of unmatched technical interrogation, dramatically reduced cycle time, and superior knowledge management, Recon represents a new standard in integrated decision support for oil and gas exploration and production companies.

The innovations introduced by Recon include:
  1. Recon Cascade Technology™ provides real-time interpretation updates.
  2. Linked, three-window work environment seamlessly integrates 2-D and 3-D interpretation views.
  3. Recon’s scalable graphics architecture ranges from desktop Linux workstations to high-end, clustered visualization centers.
Using Recon’s real-time interpretation updates, the geological interpretation workflow is converted to a highly interactive experience. Recon uses true 3-D solution algorithms to create the most accurate 2-D interpretation views that are seamlessly linked to Recon’s 3-D interpretation views.
Accurate hydrocarbon reserve analysis is of critical importance to oil and gas companies and is directly related to the quality of the geological interpretation. Recon speeds up this task by enabling geoscientists to work the way they think - in three dimensions. Designed as a single application, Recon’s interpretation environment significantly reduces the time required to reach the optimal geological interpretation. These time-savings are then used to refine the interpretation, leading to higher quality recommendations that lower the prospect development risk.
Communication remains an integral part of the exploration and production decision process. Recon’s fully annotated, 2-D cross-sections and maps are easily updated in real-time to incorporate changes in data or interpretation, saving time and leading to clearer communication and faster presentation.
IBM and AGM are working together to provide a wide range of scalable Linux solutions designed to demonstrate the power of AGM's flagship Recon product. Using the most cost-effective combination of both 32- and 64-bit CPUs with powerful new graphics technologies in Linux enables AGM to offer Recon solutions specifically tailored to its customers' needs and infrastructure requirements.
